| Where do you live? |
| I grew up in North Vancouver, but since graduating high-school have been floating around between: Victoria, where I attend school and get some waves; North Vancouver, to ride the local hills and catch up with the family and friends; and Whistler. |
|
| Who is your favorite crew to ride with? |
| The Flying Welgans are for sure my favorite crew to ride with. The shred posse or "tribe" consists of my younger sisters (Alexa and Lauren) and myself but the old man will join in if we're riding pow or moguls (sadly the moms a two planker). Lauren doesn't get up as much but you can't tell. She is fearless, has crazy good steez, and will never flail. Alexa is such a powerful and confident rider, that when riding with her, i have way less worries than riding with the doods, I can't lose her if I try ha ha. Alexa got hooked up a few years before me, but rides for herself. |
|
| Do you listen to tunes while shredding, and if so, what do you listen to? |
| I do listen to tunes while riding, and i let the conditions determine the genre I'm riding too. If there's over a foot of fresh or is super sunny and warm, I'll crank the reggae, some Augusto Pablo or Sizzla. If it's an average park day, I'll listen to hip-hop, some Biggie, Tribe Called Quest, J5, Slick Rick, Jedi Mind Tricks. If it's hard and fast out, and i need to warm up, I'll listen to metal, such as 3 Inches of Blood, Municipal Waste, Arch Enemy, or The Witch. |
|
| What type of rider are you? |
| I'd like to say I'm pretty well rounded, considering I grew up in BC and pretty much has it all. Whether I'm sessioning a feature with peeps or free-riding alone, I'm stoked. I usually let conditions determine my riding as i don't have a preference. If its an icy day, I'll go fast and make some rail to rail turns; if there's fresh snow, I'll hike natural features; or if its a foggy day with no fresh snow I'll ride some rails, it doesn't matter, I love it all. I'm a little pipe-tarded and not very competitive, but still have a blast riding the tube and enjoy participating in competitions with friends. |
|
| What are your plans for next season? |
| I want to get into touring, and spending nights in the back country, kind of reminds me of surfing and camping south Island. I've done a few weekend trips with snowshoes, but i think split boarding would be unreal. I'm going to try making one this summer with a 162 jam i have, try growing a beard, and then, I'll be ready for the mountains. |

| When did you start snowboarding? |
| I started Snowboarding when I was 12 years old on the riverbanks of Winnipeg Manitoba. My family moved out to Penticton BC 2 years later and I was hooked, I learned how to ride a real mountain at Apex. |
|
| Why were you drawn to snowboarding? |
| Definitely because of the freedom that goes along with it, I enjoyed playing sports like hockey from a really young age but I didn't like coaches telling me what to do and only being able to play on a schedule set by someone else. When I discovered snowboarding I found something that I could do whenever I wanted and progress at at my own pace. |
|
| Who do you ride with? |
| I ride with lots of different people depending on the day and what I feel like shredding. I ride lots with Shayne Zwickle, Justin VDP, Nathan Ramler, Mitch Gillespie, Barry Hartman a couple skiers and the Voleurz family. |
|
| What is Voleurz? |
| Voleurz is technically a lifestyle clothing brand based out of BC, but it has become a family of people with a shared interest in loving the outdoors and what it has to offer. We all hang out, party, ride, skate, ski or do whatever together. I don't want to say it's a "crew" because that sounds too cliquey, but we definitely have a rad group of friends! The family has produced a full length Snowboard/Ski/Skate video the last couple years as well as a bunch of shorts, it can all be viewed for free at http://www.voleurz.com |
|
| What made you choose Whistler as a home base to live/shred? |
| When I was super young, still riding on riverbanks in Manitoba, my friend Mitch Gillespie and I were watching tons of snowboard videos and reading lots of magazines, there was a lot of coverage of Whistler and we made a promise we would end up there. We both moved away to different parts of Canada but kept in touch. When I graduated High school I called him up and we moved 2 weeks later. I have stayed in Whistler for as long as I have because the mountains have a HUGE variety to offer and the town is super fun too. Both me and Mitch still live there and shred together all the time. |

| Which boards do you use for what kind of riding conditions? |
| Bataleon EvilTwin 157 for jumps and most backcountry hits. Bataleon Fun Kink 153 for jibbing and hand rails. |
|
| Why do you prefer Triple Base Technology boards over reverse camber or traditional camber boards? |
| TBT boards give faster and smoother board control in deep pow and hard groomers. Unlike reverse camber boards the TBT still looks sick on hand rails and in the air off big booters. |
|
| What is your ideal day of snowboarding? |
| My ideal day of snowboarding would consist of snowmobiles, lots of gas, a sunny day, in the back country Whistler. |
|
| Where did you grow up riding? |
| Hemlock Valley Resort, B.C. |
|
| Outside of snowboarding what are your other interests? |
| Skateboarding, tubing rivers, and jamming out on the guitar. |

| If there was a first question for you to ask yourself in a series of five questions, what would it be? |
| The first question I would ask is: Kael, when was the last time you did a dark slide. |
|
| When was the last time you did a dark slide? |
| Today on an excellent skate three demo. |
|
| Why are you playing video games rather than doing something productive? |
